Joseph Liao is the Kathryn Simmons Stamey Professor and Vice Chair of Urology at Stanford University School of Medicine.  Dr. Liao is a board-certified, fellowship-trained urologic surgeon who is nationally recognized his expertise in bladder cancer, particularly early detection, imaging, and therapy.  He received his undergraduate degree from Harvard University and medical degree from Stanford, and completed his urology residency and fellowship training at UCLA Medical Center.  His clinical practice focuses on care of patients with bladder cancer, upper tract urothelial carcinoma, and prostate cancer.  As a surgeon scientist, Dr. Liao directs a translational research laboratory and has been awarded several NIH R01’s on optical molecular imaging, urine liquid biopsy, and artificial intelligence (AI)-guided surgery for bladder cancer.  He has authored over 180 publications in top journals including Science Translational Medicine, Nature Medicine, Cell, Cancer Cell, PNAS, JAMA Surgery, Clinical Cancer Research, and European Urology, and served as the editor of the textbook Image-Guided Urologic Surgery.  Dr. Liao is an elected member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation.
